about

What do you want for Christmas? NOISE! When do you want it? NOW!

Sorry, Bing. Both the cornily-named search engine and the estate of the singer, actor, television producer, television and radio personality, and businessman, Harry Lillis Crosby Jr.

"I'll Be Home for Christmas" is a song originally written to honor soldiers overseas who, as greeting card manufacturers and nostalgia peddlers would encourage you to believe, longed to be home at Christmas time. It was penned by the lyricist Kim Gannon (born in Brooklyn!) and composer Walter Kent (graduate of City College, the first free public institution of higher education in the United States!!) and recorded in 1943 by Bing Crosby, who scored a top ten hit with the tune.

Pretty sure that our "reworking" dishonors all involved. But do you know who it does honor? Jon Solomon. That mensch has been doing his now-25-hour Christmas radio show for 35 years! Can you believe it?? What likely started as a goof is a proper institution! And, like all institutions worth their weight in Epsom salt, this endeavor of Jon's brings relief, joy, good tidings and a chance for his family to nap together on the couch.

So, to that nap we offer a drum machine, distorted guitars, a bass, a deadpan vocal and lots of swirling, echoed and reverberated stereo effects. All stuff Bing Crosby was trying to imbue his original recording with and that we have finally been able to deliver 80 years later. You are welcome, Bing! And family, LLC.

Lots of grim stuff is bubbling up in our current landscape, so we'd like to dedicate this jam to all who are actively trying to rise above. It's not easy. But please keep on with the PMA, friends. High-fives, hugs, open minds, a willingness to listen, a desire for peace and shared experiences despite our differences, and laughs... LOTSA LAFFS!

Recorded for Jon Solomon’s 35th-annual edition of the 25-Hour Holiday Radio Show on WPRB!

lyrics

I want noise for Christmas
You can brutalize my ears
Please have found sounds and readymades
And crystallizations by Varèse

Christmas eve will find me
Where the concrète beams
I want noise for Christmas
If only in my dreams

I want noise for Christmas
You can play upon my fears
Please have distortions and manipulations
And 'Metal Machine Music' by Lou Reed

Christmas eve will find me
Where the repetition gleams
I want noise for Christmas
If only in my dreams
